 HAPPY 2009

After a bumpy ride in 2008 with peaks and valleys never seen before, we turn a new chapter as we enter the New Year.  There are some bright spots as fuel prices have retreated to lows from years past.  If you listen to the news there is a lot of apprehension.  We, here at 39N, will try to provide the distractions from the real world so sorely needed.  We will also continue to collect canned and boxed food for the local food bank, so clean out your pantries and bring food here.

We'll continue to make your base of operations better and better.  An AWAS system is scheduled for Princeton by the FAA.  All of the grant work is complete, so we hope Spring will bring that additional aide.

May the New Year bring you lots of memorable flying experiences.  Thanks for calling 39N "home".

39N LogoANNUAL SANTA FLY-IN
Once again our Santa Fly-In was a huge suc-cess.  Undaunted by the pouring rain, the kids and their families just kept coming and coming.  There was no head count but we know it was many hundreds.

Because of the low ceiling, Santa had to make alternate arrangements.  Thanks to Mike Renz and his company, Analar, Jeff Morrow came to the rescue and flew Santa & his elf in an Aerospatiale helicopter.  Despite the downpour, almost everyone went onto the ramp to see the "man" arrive in style.

So many people volunteered their time and services to make this a success.  THANKS!!!
  •      Flying Tigers for the set-up and traffic control
  •      Santa's elves who did all sorts of things to keep
         everyone happy.
  •      Thanks to Janet's Weddings for the wonderful
         setting for Santa.
  •      Chris Maslanka for the sound system.
  •      Pat McKinley for her delightful holiday music to keep
the children occupied during the wait.
  •      And to the public & our customers for contributing
almost 30 garbage bags of gifts to Mercer County
Board of Social Services for distribution to the needy
in very difficult times; almost 300 pounds of food
taken to the Franklin Township Food Bank; and
about   $150 in donations to the Foodbank of
Somerset County.  As the need was stronger than
ever, you came through to help.

Congratulations, Erik Lindberg, who has been appointed Assistant Chief Pilot for the Private Course.

Attention Student Pilots:  Are you interested in an evening ground school class?  Sign up and if we get enough attendance, we'll start it after the current class ends.

Thanks and good luck to Ben Foley who filled in during the holidays, but now leaves to take a job in his area of expertise.

Raritan Valley Statistics For '08

Despite all that happened during the year, many of you were successful with you training.  2008 started out gang busters with progress on all fronts.  Then the fuel costs hit all time records and the economy soared, so some of you had to understandably slow down.

Enrollments - less than 5% decrease:
81 New Students including 4 in the youth program.
1st Solos:  31, almost twice the amount in '07.
17 Knowledge Test with our students average
          score to be 89.
    Completions:
            10 Private Pilots
             4 Instrument Pilots
             2 Commercial Pilots
             1 Certified Flight Instructor
Wings - 4 pilots.  We have to improve this.
There are many of you ready to take that next step, but the weather has been pretty bad this past month.

WELL DONE TO ALL OF YOU. CHECK OUR HONOR ROLL.
From the Right Seat
by Pete Rafle

The New Year is approaching fast.  Once more each of us is facing the chore of making resolutions for 2009.  I have gathered some ideas for resolutions for Pilots and Pilots-to be.
1. Go up the Hudson River VFR corridor with an n instructor to learn how it's done.
2. Start working on a new rating; Instrument, or Commercial.
3. Attend an RVFS seminar each quarter, at least.
4. Join the Princeton Airport Flying Tigers, rent an airplane and go on the next fly-in.
5. BFR due soon?  Schedule the one hour ground and one hour in the airplane now.
6. Night currency long past?  Schedule some time with an instructor and enjoy the quiet air and beautiful lights and regain your confidence in your night landing skills.
7. Haven't flown enough instruments lately to feel safe exercising your instrument rating? Schedule some time with a CFII so that you will comfortably pass an IPC.
8. Get checked out in a C172 RG, or a fuel injected C172 R or S.
9. Schedule some time with an instructor in a GPS equipped airplane to learn how to use a Garmin 430.
10. Buy a Garmin 696 GPS.  We have them in now.

For students, renew your goal to finish your training and fulfill your dream to fly.  For Pilots, improve your proficiency, learn new skills, earn a new rating, and fly safer and more often.

Happy New Year

This was a request from one of you.  Both of these subjects are particularly appropriate for pilots that fly from 39N.  Whether it is new information for you or a refresher, you will benefit.

I would like to briefly raise the subject of autopilots.  The general aviation pilot with a new instrument rating can find him/herself VERY busy when the forecast for moderate weather conditions turns for the worse.
The terminal area of a busy airport places multiple and rapid demands on the single pilot.  Maintaining altitude and heading; staying abreast of rapid fire vectoring instructions; and thinking and making decisions can put a lot of pressure on a pilot alone in a GA airplane.

An autopilot that maintains altitude and heading allows the pilot to avoid fixating on single instruments, and provides time to evaluate the situation with less stress, and be able to plan ahead while executing a safe approach.  If it is at all possible, install an autopilot to make your single-pilot IFR ops less stressful and much safer.

PRINCETON AIRPORT
FLYING TIGERS

Thanks to our 17 members and family that helped out at Santa's Fly-in this year.  It was a great day for a good cause and it looked like we all had fun - even those who braved the rain to direct the traffic for the record crowd.

Let's get the New Year started right by attending our first dinner meeting at the Hopewell Bistro on January 14th.  Member Skip Rawson will be our guest speaker who will  provide us with tales of his personal flying adventures.  He was in the Air Force twice.   Also join our host Steve Anasiewicz on January 18th to Lancaster (KLNS) for breakfast at Fiorentino's Restaurant on the field.  Register for these events at www.paft-nj.org .

The 2009 membership fee is now due - mail your check or stop by and see Dick Nierenberg at the airport.  Make your New Year's resolution to become a members.

Interesting Happenings at 39N

In late fall a young man scheduled a photo flight for early afternoon.  He checked up on us in the morning and shared the fact that he planned to propose.  On the guise of checking out an Introductory Flying Lesson he brought his lady friend into the airport and convinced her that expiration of the lesson was imminant so he was taking her flying instead.

Shannon Wea flew them up the corridor and return via his house where huge letters asked her to marry.  How could she refuse.  Champagne awaited the happy couple.

39N LogoLast month a photography crew from National Geographic stayed a few days, shooting scenes of the area.  Geographic is filming one hour programs of every state to be aired on the Discovery Channel some time in the future.  Additionally, a crew from the Discovery Channel came to shoot film of the Geographic crew - sort of out takes.
