HAPPY FLYING IN 2010
Now we can all sit back and relax after a very busy holiday season.  The hopes we had for the 21st Century encountered many obstacles so the first decade had many challenges for aviation.  But we are resilient and aviation requires optimism.
In this last decade many of you became pilots; became airplane owners; and called 39N your home.  For others, aviation has had to be put on the back burner while facing realities.  We hope to see you whether you are flying or not, and sincerely hope the future is brighter.
For your support we thank you - you are what 39N is all about.  We wish you the best for 2010 and we promise to continue to improve your base of operations. To our customers and our staff, thanks.

Wow - it was wonderful.  Each year this event gets bigger and better and everyone loves it.  Most of all we enjoy providing so much fun for so many.

The blizzard just 5 days prior provided the backdrop appropriate for the season.  Santa, a.k.a. airport manager Ken Nierenberg, put on a wonderful preview to keep the children hyped.

Once again, it is time to make your New Year's Resolutions for flying. Here are a few for your consideration:
  1. I will take an online AOPA Safety Foundation course.
  2. I will enroll and be diligent about taking Wings courses.
  3. I will take the FAA course on the new Hudson River SFR
  4. I will get some instruction for a night flying refresher flight and landings.
  5. I will take a few cross country flights to new destinations.
  6. I will join the Princeton Airport Flying Tigers.
  7. I will attend the next Princeton seminar.
  8. I will consider buying an airplane this year.
  9. I will attend either the Oshkosh Fly-in or Sun 'N Fun.
  10. I will buy a new Garmin GPS.
  11. I will earn my Instrument Rating, or Commercial, or Seaplane ratings.
  12. I will take someone who has never flown and introduce him to the world of general aviation.
  13. I will share bagels and coffee while meeting other pilots.
  14. I will call for an instructor if I have had to stop training for a while.
  15. I will make sure my charts are current.
  16. I will enjoy using my Pilot's certificate.
Happy New Year!  All the best wishes for Clear skies and smooth landings.

SATURDAY, JANUARY 2, 2010
10AM - NOON
Had enough of the holiday fare?  Come for some bagels & coffee and share your aviation hopes for 2010.  Start the year right and bring along a friend.  If you're home for the holidays, check this out.

FLIGHT SCHOOL STATISTICS for 2009

Since it is the end of a decade, we looked at the facts and figure since 2000.  Nationwide students enrollment and new licenses have declined, so how did 39N do?  Remember during this period we were hit with 9/11; two wars; the highest fuel prices ever; and the general economy.

Our enrollments have declined during this period, however 1st solos and completions have been reasonably steady.

We lost some of those students who wanted aviation careers when we sold the costly multi-engine plane.  It was just a short time ago that we just couldn't find instructors when the airlines hired very low time pilots.  All this changed drastically and you, the sudents have benefitted.  All in all, we have weathered these changes well.

Another area which we thought would be difficult was the new TSA regulations, however this has brought of students from all over the world and the clearance procedures work very well.

Enrollments:  82 new students, slightly increased
1st Solos:  34, 10% increase
6 16 year olds soloed on their birthdays, a record for us.
Private Pilots:  12, 15% increase
Others:  2 Instrument pilots and 1 Commercial
So if you are one of the students who are in this group, congratu-lations.  To the 200+ people who received Introductory Flying Lesson this holiday season, I hope that you will choose Raritan Valley & its fine staff to earn your wings in 2010.

NEW YEAR'S RESOLUTION - ATTEND GROUND SCHOOL

                PRIVATE PILOT GROUND SCHOOL
Are you enjoying the flying but having difficulty keeping up with the book work?  You are not alone.  We will start a ground school class is we get about 10-12 students.  We were unable to get a fall class together, however we do know that several of you have expressed an interest.

 Cost:  Enrolled RVFS students $75
          New Students - class & books $425.
          Non-39N students - Books +$125.
Sign up with the day of the week which you cannot attend.

INSTRUMENT CLASS
We will begin an Instrument class with similar requirements.
The instructor will choose the materials and class will be an additional $75.  Sign up with the day not convenient.

 PINCHHITTERS CLASS
This class is designed for the person who sits in the right seat when you fly.  It gives them sufficient information and training to be able to land when the pilot can't.  More importantly the right seater enjoys flying more,  We would do this class on two Saturday mornings and the flying would be individually.  Again, please sign up for information.

SAFETY CORNER

Winter presents some challenges to pilots and airplanes.  On frosty mornings, it is imperative to remove frost from the surfaces of wings and empennage.  Gently use a broom to remove and smooth the frost.  Remove the frost from the top of the fuselage aft of the cabin.  Position the airplane of the ramp so that the sun will warm the airplane and melt any remnants of the frost.

Never use scrapers of the windshield.  Ask the flight coordinators for deicing spray for the windshield.  Use your gloved hand or a rag to remove the melting frost from the windshield.

Once the engine is started, ensure that the defroster vents are open and the heat is on to clear the inside of the windshield and side windows.

Taxiing around on the ice covered ramp and taxi ways should be done at minimum speed and with careful application of brakes.  Position the airplane on a dry, ice-free area on the run-up area before starting the pre-takeoff run-up. Position the airplane so that your run-up will not blow ice chunks and snow into another airplane nearby. Cold weather will provide your engine a bit more power, so having cleaned the airplane of frost and snow, enjoy the better climb performance and the winter landscape below.

Happy Holidays
!

Thanks to the 18 PAFT members that contributed their time to help out at Princeton Airport's Santa's Fly-IN.

Let's start off 2010 with a bang by attending the January 13th dinner meeting, hosted by Art Martin at Café Graziella.  Art wants us to celebrate his birthday with him and he'll be supplying beer and wine.  And PAFT will see how many members we can get to the meeting by contributing $20 per member (members who have paid 2010 dues) to the cost of their meal.

Also let's all try to make the January 17th Fly-In hosted by Steve Anasiewicz to Montgomery Orange County), NY (KMGJ). (Yes that's right, Steve is not going to Lancaster.)  So go to www.paft-nj.com for details and sign up for these events.   It is also a great time to join PAFT @$25 per family.   See Dick Nierenberg for sign up.

EDITOR'S NOTE:  A special thank you to Ben Gadzowicz who promptly responded to my call for newsletter information about the Tigers.  Thanks for your dedication to the Club.
