GREETINGS,
March is always a special month for us as 24 years ago, we bought 39N.  It was with great trepidations that we made the plunge.  Undaunted, we continued to operate out of 47N until the end of the lease in '87, and we put all of our energies into this airport.  We are pleased with the accomplishments made over the years, and look forward to many more of serving you.
As we finish this newsletter, March is coming in like a lion.  We hope with Spring is around the corner with longer days and hopefully warmer weather, you will come out and listen to the roar of the engines.  Please stay on the pavement with your cars as the ground is extremely soft.

PILOT ACTION WANTED

39N is one a four New Jersey airports in the process to have equipment installed to provide an LPV instrument approach for Runway 10.  Please take a few minutes and tell the FAA how this will enhance your flying, provide for safer approaches, and any other reasons you may have.

From the Right Seat
by Pete Rafle

Aviation has been in the news for the past few weeks.  Not all the news was bad, but the two of the three incidents were, indeed, bad.
Capt. Sullenberger had the "Right Stuff", ditching in the Hudson River with no loss of life.  Exceptional airmanship, great decision making, concise radio calls, rapid rescue of pass- sengers and crew all made this the aviation story of the year.
The sad icing incident of the Dash 8 at Buffalo once again illustrated for the public how fast an airplane can stop flying in icing conditions.
And, on Wednesday, in Amsterdam, a Boeing 737-800 lands short of the runway with 9 dead. Meager details have come out so far, but it is known that the airplane had minimal fuel on board after a 3 hour+ flight.
When the analysis of each of accident is concluded, a chain of events or actions will be shown to lead up to the final contact with the ground.  Chief among these is usually crew resource management, situational awareness, a failure to communicate clearly, and distraction from the main job of flying the airplane.
Capt. Sullenberger provides an example of what each pilot needs to do when in an emergency.  Fly the airplane first.

CONGRATULATIONS ANTHONY CUADRADO
1st SOLO on 16th BIRTHDAY

39N LogoHaving enrolled with RVFS in May  2008, Anthony Cuadrado diligently pursued his goal of becoming a pilot with the added achievement of soloing on his 16th birthday.  On Valentine's Day Anthony and his family headed for the airport to accomplish this goal.  Despite the cold weather  everything went as planned. Flight Instructor, Above, Erick Lindberg pins the "First Solo" pin on Anthony's collar as everyone waited for cake.  Next goal - Private pilot's license in February '10.

Monthly MEET N' GREET39N Logo

When:  Saturday, March 7th, '09
Where:  Pilots' Lounge
Time:  10:00 am - noon

WHY - WHY NOT?   Join us for coffee & bagels and share your "flying experiences".
Some of you are reluctant to join in, but just remember "Pilots are plane people."  Whether you have 5000 hours or 5, you can enjoy each other's stories.
Everyone is welcome.  Free.
FLIGHT SCHOOL

Welcome to the almost 30 students who have joined our school since the New Year.  They range from younster enrolled in the Youth Program to Private, Instrument and Commercial students.  Somehow we have neglected to assign some of you to an instructor.  Please call the office and we will remedy that error.

PRIVATE GROUND SCHOOL CLASS?
We have about 1/2 dozen signed up for a Private Ground School Class, however we do need 12 students.  The class will meet once a week on the day that favors most, from 7 - 10 pm.  Cost is $75 for RVFS students and the same amount for new students who will have to purchase the kit.  Sign up and we will get it organized!

SAFETY SEMINAR
Everything You Wanted to Know About the G1000 Glass Cockpit
 39N Logo
AGI - Steve Hansell
March 17 - 7:00pm
Session 1: Introduction and VFR operations.
What are the basic features of the G1000 glass cock-pit including weather, traffic, and terrain awareness?  What are its advantages and disadvantages compared with the sixpack?  How does it enhance VFR opera-tions?  We will answer these questions as we use the simulator to plan and fly a VFR flight.
March 24 - 7:00pm
     Session 2: IFR operations.
The G1000 really shines in the IFR environment, but you need to master your autopilot as well as the G1000's advanced functions.  Come along on an IFR flight as we practice approaches and are handed several "curveball" scenarios by ATC.
39N LogoMEET CFI ERIK LINDBERG

Practically everyone who has anything to do with 39N knows Erik, as he helps out wherever he is on the airport.  Erik in native to NJ, having graduated Watchung Hills Regional High School.  He headed to Florida where he earned a BS in Aeronautical Science and Commercial, MEL Instru-ment License at Embry Riddle in '04.
Erik joined RVFS' staff as a flight coordinator in the spring of '06.  He worked behind the counter while studying for his CFI which he earned in May of '08.  He also taught two private classes at the time.  If you remember instructors were very hard to find.  Immediately Erik's schedule was full from sun up to sundown.

Safety Corner by Pete Rafle
Spring is starting to show signs of its arrival.  As the weather warms up, pilots start to think about flying again.  If you have not been flying for a few months, why not dust off the aircraft handbook and review Emergency and Normal procedures, Operating Limitations, and Weight and Balance calculations.
Make the decision about how you feel about your skill level after the winter layoff.  Do not hesitate to get an instructor to go up with you if you feel you need a refresher session.  Once in the air, fly the airplane and exercise all the maneuvers that you have allowed to go dormant over the winter.  You will be "Back in the Saddle" sooner than you think.
Better yet, make a resolution to keep up your skills all year long so you stay sharp and safe.
