GREETINGS
As we embark on our 25th year at Princeton Airport, we remember those difficult years, but then look out on the field to see such significant changes that we have brought to 39N.   When we moved in, there were 33 planes, the base of the administration building and two sets of T-hangars.  You could hear a pin drop in the lobby.
Facing the end of a 20 year lease at 47N, the purchase of Princeton Airport became an option which we took.  But all was not easy and we faced years of obstacles from the Township and neighbors surrounding the airport.  But we focused on our mission of serving General Aviation and with your help, we have made 39N a premier airport in New Jersey and the country.  We plan to celebrate this milestone in April, when the weather is milder.  Thank you for your suport, and a Happy Anniversary to us all.
                                          Naomi, Dick, and Ken Nierenberg
P.S. In 2011 Princeton Airport will mark its 100 birthday.  Any ideas?
AND IT SNOWED, AND SNOWED, AND SNOWED
AND WE PLOWED & PLOWED & PLOWED!
Well, if we thought January made a "winter statement", February showed who's boss.  From the beginning of the month to the very end, the white stuff just kept falling.  We're not sure how many inches or feet of snow fell, but the piles of snow will probably be there in July.  We were opened way before any of the area airports, thanks to Airport Manager Ken, his side-kick, Steve and son, Jack.  They work very long hours for many days.
With only 20 days until Spring and 14 days until Daylight Savings Time, it should not be long before you can pre-flight without freezing and/or shoveling!

ATTENTION ALL PILOTS

"Pilots who have not yet traded in their paper pilot certificates have
until March 31, 2010, when the paper certificates are set to
expire.  If you're still using paper, don't delay.  Pilots can no longer
exercise the privileges of their paper pilot certificates after the
March 31 deadline.  Student certificates are not affected...
" From the FAAST Blast.

Renewing a certificate can be done online or through the mail, and instruction can be found at:

Do it today - pilots who rent will be checked at the front desk.

FROM THE RIGHT SEAT by Pete Rafle

Operating in the landing pattern at a non-towered field requires each pilot to maintain proper distance from the airplane ahead.  One must also be aware of other airplanes in the air and on the ground.  While proceeding on the downwind leg, note the location of all these airplanes.  Before reaching the "abeam" point, determine that the runway will be clear for your landing.

In the civilian aviation world, the runway should be used by one airplane at a time.  No "section" (formation) takeoffs, no landings five seconds apart, no "taxiing into position and hold".    Do not sit on a runway waiting for the previous airplane to taxi off.  "Position and hold" is a tower controller command and this maneuver should not be used by pilots at non-towered fields.

If you need to make a precautionary landing, while in the pattern at a non-towered field, and the distance between your aircraft and the one ahead of you is closing, make a call advising the traffic of your problem and asking him to go around so you can land on an open runway and avoid any conflict.  You have the emergency and other airplanes will only know that when you declare the emergency and stake your claim for the runway.

PRINCETON AIRPORT
FLYING TIGERS

As sure as February follows January, the snows continued last month.  Fortunately, the weather cooperated on Sunday, the 21st.  On that day, 9 planes containing 19 Flying Tigers and guests took off for a great trip to University Park Airport (KUNV) in State College, Pennsylvania.  As usual, a great time was had by all.

This month, our fly-in is scheduled for March 21 to Hartford (KHVD).  While we're there, we'll have a chance to catch up with former PAFT member Bob Bruccoleri who runs an alternative energy research company.  Members are already signing up at

http://www.paft-nj.org/NEXT_FLY-IN_INFO.htm.  That's also the place to go if you'd like to see if there's an available seat for the trip.

Our March dinner meeting will be at Pheasant's Landing on Amwell Road, Hillsborough.  Flying Tiger Pete Rafle will be talking about celestial navigation - now THAT'S a real VOR/GPS backup system.  There will also be an update on Sun 'n Fun planning.  If you can't wait until then, go to http://www.paft-nj.org/SUN-N-FUN.htm.  Signup for the dinner at http://www.paft-nj.org/NEXT_MTG_INFO.htm.

If it's slipped your mind, now would be a great time to mail or drop off your $25 check for 2010 dues.  There are lots of great activities planned and you won't want to miss out on any.
