PASSOVER

GREETINGS,
When April arrives we are pretty sure that those difficult days of winter have passed.  All of our senses tell us it's Spring - it smells good; nature is turning green; we can go out without heavy jackets; and all around, it is uplifting.  Many of you fair weather flyers are cranking up the engines, and it is music to our ears.  Welcome back.

Airport Manager, Ken Nierenberg, has been busy pursuing additional aides for pilots to make 39N safer and easier to use.  A new security fence has been approved to replace our rickety old one.  The Automatic Weather Observation System (AWOS) should be installed by the next newsletter.  And finally, the Localizer Performance with Vertical Guidance (LPV) is moving along nicely through the system to become a reality.

March came in like a lion, and hopefully leaves like a lamb.  The unpaved areas of the airport are very soft, so please stay on the pavement with your cars.

HAVE YOU HEARD ABOUT "EVOLUTION"

DICK NIERENBERG

For those of you who seldom go passed the rest rooms in the lobby, the office in the left rear serves as the base of operations for Dick, the father of our operations.  At the time he was comfortably set in the family furniture business with normal business hours.

As a 1/4 partner in a Navion, life was simple with normal business hours.  Lo and behold an opportunity (?) arose for a career change at the FBO at 47N and Dick took it.  Ken was 7 and his brother Jon was 9.  Suddenly the family life revolved around the airport which became the new backyard.

Dick's passion for aviation has not diminished, however his physical agility has, so much of his role is advice, counseling, parts searching, and "guru".  Many thanks for your venture - many have and are reaping the benefits of your efforts.  Come back and say "hi" to him.

ABOUT DICK & FAMILY

From the Right Seat by Pete Rafle

Pre-flight inspections in the springtime have a unique chal-lenge.  Starlings, sparrows and other of birds have a special need to build nests.  They are under pressure to build the nest quickly so the young will be hatched are mature before fall.

Airplanes that are idle for even one day will attract birds.  Their favorite sites are the nacelle on top of the cylinders. Also, the horizontal stabilizers of C-172's have round holes in the rear bulkhead that birds can easily go through.  Look for twigs and grass hanging out of the stabilizer!!  Tail cones are another common nest site.  They can get in through cable openings.

Carefully inspect the airplane for nests.  Grass and twigs on the ground around the airplane, and dropping on the propeller and tail surfaces are strong clues that avian contractors are in the neighborhood.

Remove all the materials you find.  If necessary have the nacelle opened to get it all out.  The last thing you want is a nest burning in the engine compartment.

When you first meet Shannon, you immediately get a smile and hear a wonderful accent.  His back-groung is lengthy and admirable, as he was born in Liberia, which is located on the west coast of Africa.

Since early childhood, he has always wanted to be a pilot.  Well, after a long trek, he achieved his goal.  Shannon joined our school late last summer when the airlines cut back - their loss was our gain.

Shannon takes great joy when someone walks through the door with no lknowledge of aviation and he can make him/her learn to fly - he feels very proud.

Safety Corner by Pete Rafle
Spring as sprung, the grass has riz...Watch out where the birdies is

The birds are on the move.  This is migration time and they are sharing the skies with us without any regard to hemispheric cruising altitudes or right of way rules.  Hawks, geese, plovers, and all the song birds are an ever present concern for pilots.

The U.S. Air ditching in February provides ample proof as to what a few geese can do to an airliner.  For a Cessna or Piper pilot, a bird taking out a windshield or damaging a horizontal stabilizer can produce a potentially lethal outcome.

Be vigilant in your scan for birds as well as aircraft.  When able fly high.  Most bird strikes occur under 2500 ft.  Do not fly over bird sanctuaries.  They are clearly delineated on the charts.
Remember, birds fly at night too!  The higher your speed, the harder it is for the birds to get out of your way.  Under 90 kts they usually can get away.
IF you fly through a flock and feel a strike, FLY the AIRPLANE.  Evaluate performance and make a precautionary landing as soon as practicable.

FLYING TIGERS

Our March meeting was a success with 25 members enjoying a great meal at the Runway Restaurant while listening to our guest speaker and member Michael Jackson telling us about the great things The Black Pilots of America are doing.   Also we have some extra money in the club treasury and we agreed to use it to stimulate the economy.  Tell us your suggestion - details to follow.

Our Fly-in to York, Pa was redirected to Montgomery County due to localized weather.  We redirected flyin turned out to be a good option for the 7 planes and 14 people who enjoyed the day.  We will do more of this in the future to avoid cancellations.

On April 19th members Ernie Schirmer and Cynthia Gilbert will take the club to Georgetown, DE (KGED) for brunch at the Lighthouse landing restaurant on the field.  Check out our website www.paft-nj.org for details and sign up.  All are welcome.
