GREETINGS,

Aviation holds the imagination of many, regardless of whether they are pilots or not.  June 2nd a team will be here for most of the day, shooting advertisements for Bloomingdale's, as they are highlighting Amelia Earhart.

If you have never had to opportunity to watch something like this, you would be amazed how long it takes to make a commercial.  We have hosted a team for Reese's Pieces and they were at the airport from sun up to sunset for a 30 second commercial.

Airports, especially 39N, make a great backdrop for promotions.
Stop by and take a look.
CHARTS, CHARTS, CHARTS

The FAA has restructured the sales of charts.  As of October of last year, dealers are required to sell a substantially higher amount per year.  Unfortunately this left many smaller facilities unable the meet the requirements.  We meet that minimum since we have always carried the whole country.  Due to the inclement weather and/or the economy, we have not sold nearly what we had, so the amount of returns has exceeded the FAA maximum.

Our standing order has been reduced in order to find a happy medium.  To be assured that the charts you need will be in stock, you can either put in a standing order with us or you should purchase them at the beginning of the cycle.

If we order replacements too close to the expiration date, the FAA will not send them.  It is a balancing act between servicing you and "eating" unsold charts.
I AM LEGAL - BUT ARE YOU SAFE?
GIVE IT A THOUGHT
by Shannon Wea, Assistant Chief Pilot

Aviation remains prestigious, exciting and convenient, whether for a hobby, a means of transportation or a career, since Orville and Wilbur Wright achieved the first powered, sustained, and controlled airplane flights in history on December  17, 1903 near Kitty Hawk, NC.  Flying is a skill that highly regards safety.  As a matter of fact, I engaged into a conversation with several Designated Examiners and they all testified to me that the primary concern when they conduct a check ride is "safety".

From the Right Seat
New York VFR Corridor, Part 2
by Chief Pilot Pete Rafle

Last month, I described how to navigate the Hudson River Corridor below the Class B airspace.  This time I will offer another, and perhaps more appealing way to fly this route.

Consulting the T.A.C. for the New York Class B, plan to fly from 39N northeasterly to the Raritan Bay.  Call New York Approach on the appropriate frequency and request clearance through Class B up the Hudson at 1500 or 2000 feet or higher if you wish.  You will be given a transponder squawk and assigned the requested altitude, if they are able, and cleared through Class B up the Hudson.

Stay alert for traffic advisories and follow the controller's instructions.  The view is wonderful and working with the controllers is good practice.

Have a great flight.

The SAFETY CORNER

Here I go again, talking about landing on the first third of the runway.  It seems perfectly logical to aim for the numbers and land just beyond them.  This provides all that runway ahead of you to stop the airplane without having to hit the brakes hard enough to spin the tires and tubes from the wheels.

A couple of weeks ago, a Skyhawk approached the airport way above the recommended approach speed.  The approach was high on short final so our intrepid pilot nosed down to keep his aim point in sight.  Not sufficiently reducing his power, the airspeed increased even more, but he was now closer to the runway and long. He leveled off for the flare and proceeded to float for a long time, past Taxiway B.  Still floating, the pilot realized that the asphalt was getting sparse and the grass and fields beyond the runway were speeding towards him.

FLYING TIGERS

This month we had an enjoyable dinner meeting at O'Connor's Restaurant where 21 members and guests enjoyed the evening which included a safety awareness video brought by member Larry West.   Bad weather caused the May fly-in to be postponed for one week, but Steve Hansell lead the Tigers to Cape May for a good breakfast and a tour of the aviation museum on site on the following Sunday.

Member Steve Loewenthal will lead the Tigers to Millville Airport (KMIV) on June 14th and we are now preparing for PAFT picnic scheduled for Sunday June 28th at 39N starting at noon.  Don't miss either event.  Visit www.paft-nj.org for more details and sign up.  See you at the picnic.
