GREETINGS

May ended a month of wonderful flying weather and many new faces at the airport.  The 17th of May had three students enjoy their first solo.

The installation of cameras for the security surveillance system are popping up all over the airport.  They should be ready within the month.  39N will be the first of the fifteen New Jersey airports which will get the AWAAS installed.  Rumor has it that it's in the next few months.

As we enter June and summer, we hope you have wonderful weather for those trips you have been planning for a while.
                                                                               Happy Flying!

 NATIONAL LEARN TO FLY DAY
With over 400 organizations nationwide, we enthusiasticaly  participated in this national event on May 15 to enlighten people about becoming a pilot and how it changes your life.  We had hourly presentations led by Steve Nierenberg.  About 20 people attended with a variety of goals and perceptions.  Some have enrolled, and  others they left better informed and we hope to see them in the cockpit soon.

From the Right Seat by Chief Pilot Peter Rafle

Thinking again, about what makes a good landing.

It starts at the upwind end of the downwind leg.  Complete the Before Landing Checklist.  Visualizing where the airplane should be when abeam the numbers - altitude, airspeed, crabbing if necessary for any crosswind.  Power reduction and first notch of flaps.  In a C-172, slowing to 70 knots, and turning Base when about 45º from the approach end of the runway.  Observing, High ? or Low?, Fast or Slow?.  Pitch for the proper approach speed, timing the turn onto final.

Then on final, Lineup, Airspeed , and Rate of Descent. Only three things to pay attention to: Into the flare, eyes looking out to the end of the runway, observing the sink rate, pressure holding the nose up, Reducing power, Patience, Patience and then the satisfying sound of the "chirp" of the tires softly touching the pavement.

Piece of cake.....Smile.....I've only done it a few thousand times.

Safety Corner

I still hear pilots call out just prior to departure, "Any aircraft on base or final at Princeton please advise."

This particular voice call is a problem for me because, I assume the pilot has not looked for traffic, and has not been monitoring the common frequency.  At a non-towered airport, we all need to communicate our position in the pattern, AND LOOK OUT for other aircraft in the vicinity.  If there is a non-radio equipped airplane in the pattern, he will not hear our pilot asking for base and final traffic and, of course, cannot respond.

It only takes a few moments to perform a turn on the ground while looking for traffic on the downwind, base, and final.  If it is clear for takeoff, make the standard takeoff announcement.  If there is traffic, then hold short; keep quiet; wait for the traffic to clear the runway; check for traffic again; and then make the departure announcement and takeoff.

FLYING TIGERS

May was a busy month for PAFT.  Thanks to members Dan and Iona for arranging the well-attended dinner meeting at Princeton Windrows.  The guest speaker, Bill Fili, a WWII aviator, shared his adventures with the members, but not everyone may have realized they were also in the presence of more than one UFO (United Flying Octogenarians

www.unitedflyingoctogenarians.org).

The PAFT fly-in destination for May was Montgomery (KMGJ), NY: good weather, short flight and good food.  Photos can be found at  http://www.paft-nj.org/PAFT_PHOTOS_MAY_2010_FLY-IN.htm

To close out May we visited the recently renovated USS Intrepid aircraft carrier museum in Manhattan (we last toured the Intrepid in 2005).  The 3-minute ride on the ferry from Weehawken beat using the Lincoln Tunnel.  Picture can be found at http://www.paft-nj.org/PAFT_PHOTOS_MAY_23_2010_INTREPID.htm

Looking ahead, PAFT will hold its annual picnic at 39N on June 27th - stop by, say hello and join PAFT.
