Dear Naomi,

The first six months of 2011 have been a challenge - the snowy weather, rainy weather, and then, very hot weather.  The soaring fuel prices were another blow to an industry which neither needed the kick nor deserved it.

But the weather is much more tolerable and fuel prices have stabilized - so it's great to hear the roar of the engines.  We've seen faces that haven't been to the airport for quite a while - welcome back.  And to the many new faces, we hope you enjoy your journey to acquire your license.

The continuance of the Centennial celebration brought the Garmin Seminar.  Record breaking heat did not diminish the amazing equipment being brought to the aviation world.   We have been Garmin dealers for over 17 years, and it's great to see its growth in avionics available and the size of the company.  Hopefully, we have contributed to its growth.

Below you'll read about our gathering to pay tribute Richard A. Newhouse,  the pioneer who in 911 began designing and building airplanes here.  It was a busy month.

Newhouses Meet the Nierenbergs

On Saturday, June 18, descendants of Richard A. Newhouse, the aviation pioneer who began to design and build airplanes at the site of 39N converged in the lounge.  The eldest grandson came from California, while others came from Illinois, Pennsylvania, and Florida.  After lunch we all went to a hangar where history and stories of the past were shared with the aviation community as well as people from the area.

Safety Corner by Assistant Chief Pete Rafle

I was in the pattern last week with a student who was practicing soft field, short field, and normal landings.  As I usually do, I recorded each landing by turning the OBS 10º after each landing. ( I start at 010 for the first landing, 020 for the second, etc.)  The student was impressed by this simple way of keeping track of lots of landings during the lesson, and suggested that I share some of these "tricks" with my readers.  In the "old days" I used to use a grease pencil to mark a line for each landing, crossing four with a diagonal to indicate 5 landings.  The OBS is easier and less messy.

SUMMER FLYING DESTINATIONS

By Chief Pilot  Ryan Vinton

Now that summer is officially here and most of us are back in the air on a more regular basis, one of the big questions is where to go when we get up there? I've put together a list of a few of my favorite day or overnight trip destinations for consideration.  If you are a new pilot and may have questions about planning. you can always ask an instructor for advice.  Enjoy privileges of your license - you worked hard for it.

PRINCETON AIRPORT
FLYING TIGERS

June is the turning point for PAFT. The good news is we experience the day of the year with the most hours of daylight.  Unfortunately, just after the middle of the month daylight starts slipping away.

PAFT tried to kick off the summer round of fly-ins by going to Block Island (KBID), first on June 12 and then again on June 26, but summer weather got in the way.  Since going east didn't work, two planes and four members flew north to Orange County Airport (KMGJ) in Montgomery, NY on June 26 for breakfast.

The next fly-in, on July 17, will be to Gettysburg, PA (W05) to experience the 148th anniversary of the battle of Gettysburg and the 150th anniversary of the start of the Civil War.  Interested in joining PAFT? Visit our Web site at www.paft-nj.org.  Guests are welcome at all events.
