GREETINGS,
This newsletter is packed with all sorts of interesting information, from outer space to daily happenings at 39N.  We will initiate a Meet N Greet every month to meet senior and brand new pilots in our lounge.  To keep you one step ahead of the FAA you can find some of their latest decisions.  So check out the news and make sure you pass it to your friends, what is happening at Princeton.

RVFS' MOST FAMOUS GRADUATE - KEN HAM Commander Ken Ham

After writing to Ed Ham, falther of the Astronaut Ken Ham, I received a wonderful telephone call, where we reminisced for almost an hour.  After Ken got his Private Pilot's license with Raritan Valley Flying School in 1983 (at47N) he went on to the Naval Academy.  Upon graduation he decided to continue flying and was a F-18 pilot and then a test pilot.  He later went onto NASA and entered the Space Program.  I received a wonderful package of goodies from Ed Ham, however I told him that I am waiting for an autographed copy of Ken's picture.  I guess he is our most famous graduate.

MEET N' GREET39N Logo

When:  1st Saturday of every month
Where:  Pilots' Lounge
Time:  10:00 am - noon

Please join us Saturday August 2nd for our first gathering.

WHY?
What is the next best thing that pilots like to do, after flying - talk about flying.  Share your aviation experiences with other pilots, student pilots, and "wanna be" pilots.  Perhaps you want to share your flying adventures with someone; perhaps share the expense of a flight; maybe you are having hard times now and can't continue flying, but you sure can enjoy the airport.  Let's have some good ole' "hangar flying".  Join us.
GOOD NEWS from the FAA & Congress

MEDICALS:  Effective immediately, the FAA is extending the duration of third class medicals from 36 calendar months to 60 calendar months (five years) and first class medicals from six calendar months to 12 calendar months for pilots under age 40.  Also, current and expired medical certificates are grandfathered under this rule.

Current and expired medical certificates are grandfathered under this rule.

User FeesThe Senate Committee, lead by Pat Murray (D-WA) states that the FSASA won't spend any money to implement new user fees if the DOT appropriations bill, now pending int eh Senate passes.  "None of the funds in the Act shall be available for the FAA to finalize or implement users fees not specifically aurthorized by law after the date .. enactment..."

This is certainly good news in the world of aviation as there has been lots of negatives.

FROM THE RIGHT SEAT by Chief Pilot Peter Rafle

Over the years of being involved with airplanes and aviation, I have read many books that have enriched the flying experience.  I thought I would share a few of my favorite books about aviation.

Wind, Sand, and Stars,  by Antoine de Saint Exupery, is a description of the airline business in the 1930's in North Africa, France and South America.
Stick and Rudder, by Wolfgang Langewiesche is the quintessential book on aviation theory.
Cannibal Queen, by Stephen Coonts is a great read of a cross the United States trip in a Stearman biplane.
Flyboys, by James Bradley, is a vivid description of what it was like to be a Naval Aviator in the Pacific in World War II.
Song of the Sky, by Guy Murchie, describes the world of DC-3 and DC-4 airline flying.

I also read any article written by Barry Schiff, the former TWA captain in Flying or AOPA Pilot.

Hope you find time a read some good airplane book, and then let me know about it.

PRINCETON AIRPORT
FLYING TIGERS

The weather finally cooperated for the 10 members & guests who attended the July fly-in to Newport, RI.  We had a fun lunch at the Black Pearl restaurant followed by some excursions with several members enjoying an afternoon sail while others browsed the real estate market at the cozy Newport mansions.

The July picnic was a great success with over 55 members and guests attending our celebration enjoying the good food, games and interesting conversation.

We are also due for great weather for our August 17th fly-in to York, PA hosted by member John Horan.

Plans are in progress for a tour of the NY TRACON in the near future.  Please check out our website www.paft-nj.org for additional information on our activities and sign ups.

Attention:  Renters & Students

This is a reminder of RVFS policies, which we have to reiterate and reinforce.  Your cooperation is appreciated.

1.  Please give us a credit card to keep on file.
2.  Fuel purchased off site of 39N will be reimbursed at our retail rate.  Unfortunately, some airports are charging significantly more than we are.
3.  DVDs:  The ground school portion is based upon your reading the text; referring to your maneuvers manual; and reinforcing that with watchting DVDs.  Usage at the airport is free.  If you wish to take them home, it will be $2/night.  In the past we have lost more than we have been able to rent.  Please return them promptly or you will be charged for the full set.  (We cannot buy just one.)
4.  ALL FAA Knowledge Tests are revised effective:  July 31st.  We will have the latest editions of the FAR/AIMS, test preps, and all related material shortly thereafter.

A BIT OF HISTORY AT 39N

A recent visit by helicopter pilot,39N Logo
Victor Miasnikowicz, who has an operation at Lancaster, brought back a bit of Princeton Airport history.  Victor was a pilot with Princeton Airways, a commuter during the late 70s to early 80s. They ran many flights to the major airports.

 INTERESTING HAPPENINGS

Recently 39N was the base of operations for the crew of the helicopter which was taking pictures by air over the campus of Princeton University for the television show - "HOUSE".  For those who haven't seen it, they transform Frist Hall into "Princeton-Plainsboro Medical Center".  It is obvious from the aerial shots that it is Princeton and the adjacent area, including Lake Carnegie.
Safety Corner

During the magneto check, why does the pilot return to BOTH after testing right and left magnetos?

The reason is that when selecting the RIGHT or LEFT magneto, half of the plugs are not firing because the other magneto is grounded out.  Returning to BOTH allows the plugs to burn off any residue that may have collected, and provides the pilot with a reference RPM for testing the other magneto.
