 GREETINGS,

Having had a very, very wet June, the appearance of the sun is all that much sweeter.  July has been a pilot's dream of VFR weather, day after day.  Then typical New Jersey summer weather returned with thunderstorms and humidity.  But we can fly in between.

BECOMES MOVIE SET
Gerbil & Joe Cross.39N Logo
Early Monday July 27th a movie crew arrived at the airport to shoot some scenes for an upcoming movie to be released next Springon.  "SON OF MOURNING" stars an young movie star, Joe Cross.  Above left is Joe Cross with a passenger of a large gerbil.  Right the camera is adjusting while shooting the gerbil.

Joe Cross is getting the appropriate make up and hairstyling.

The crew started about 8am and left about 6pm.  Ah, show business.

When filming, there was a green screen behind the helicopter for later adjustments.

WORDS FROM THE BIG HONCHO - DICK NIERENBERG
The dumpsters are NOT public dumpsters.  In an effect to maintain a well maintained airport, we pay vast sums of money for the dumpsters for the airport operations.  Old cars, furniture, and all sorts of debris have been found.  We have installed a monitor and we will go after violators.
ALSO, for those who can't read English, the card board recycling bin is for "cardboard" only - no paper, styrofoam nor garbage.  Again, violators will be removed from the field.  Please cooperate.

There have been some recent articles in the training magazines about soft field takeoffs.  When executing a soft field takeoff it is very important to maintain directional control, maintain a constant pitch attitude that places the nose wheel just off the ground, and once airborne, to remain in ground effect until flying speed is attained. Staying in ground effect requires releasing some back pressure on the yoke, and then easing in forward pressure as the airplane accelerates. Then smoothly fly up and out of the ground effect at the recommended speed. Do not be in a rush to raise the flaps. Wait until you are 500 ft agl with a positive rate of climb and then clean up the airplane.
It is far better to give your attention to directional control and climb out than to immediately raise the flaps and distract yourself from flying the airplane.

Get There-itis

You are on a long cross country.  You notice that the weather you are in is very different from what was forecast. You call Flight Watch, but the information they give doesn't agree with what you are seeing.  You give a pilot report, but what do you DO next?  Continue or land where it is still VFR and get a thorough briefing and consider your options.  Once on the ground ask yourself the following questions:

Do I really have to get back home today or in the next (fill in the blank) hours?
Can I complete the flight safely in the weather I can now expect along my route?
What alternates can I fly to safely and be closer to home or my destination?
Is there plenty of room on my credit card for fuel and lodging, and possibly a rental car?
Am I putting safety first?
Ask the FBO for the name of the nearest motel and best restaurant in town.

Fly safe, live longer, have fun flying.

Johnathan Garcia
16th BIRTHDAY SOLO
1993 appears to be the year when  many future pilots were to be born.  Johnathan Garcia is the 4th person to solo on his 16th birthday during 2009.  His is a bit more unusual inasmuch as he lives on the other side of the George Washington Bridge.  Although he started in September of last year, his decision to solo on his birthday began three weeks prior.
Johnathan owes a lot to his father who drove him daily to the airport to achieve this fete.
Above - Assistant Chief Pilot Shannon Wea surgically cuts the shirt as Johnathan's father and uncle take pictures in rear.

FLYING TIGERS
There is nothing like a flight to an island for a great summer escape, and boy was it a great day for the 24 members and guests (9 planes) who flew to Block Island for the July Fly-In.  The weather was perfect; the restaurant was good; and the view sitting on a hill overlooking a magnificent view of the water was perfect.   Thanks, Paul, for a great day!!!!

So if you enjoyed Block Island or you could not make that trip, we suggest you sign up for the August 16th Fly-In to another island getaway - Nantucket, MA (KACK).  Larry West, our host, says it will be a memorable day, so let's join him and hope he can provide the same weather as Paul.   On Monday, August 3rd there will be the long awaited tour of the NY TRACON, thanks to the ongoing efforts of Ernie Schirmer, who worked  through all the roadblocks to get at least 15 members to visit the site.   That tour is booked up but maybe there will be another in the future.

So visit our website www.paft-nj.org to see the details of our activities and sign up for the next fly-in.  New members are always welcome.
