GREETINGS,
Many of us will look back on September '08 with fond memories of wonderful flying days.  The world will look back and remember the tumultuous financial situation.  If you are lucky enough to escape into the air, you have found out why so many pilots love to fly.

Last month gave us an extended TFR while NYC hosted so many heads of state for United Nations general assembly.  You had better check the TFRs as the presidential campaign activities increase.

And once again, the Princeton Historical Society put on a great show.  What a special event!

SAFETY SEMINAR
"NIGHT FLYING"
Monday, October 27, 7:00 - 10:00pm
CFI:  BRIAN KONSKO
Now that the daylight hours are shorter, come learn some techniques to make night flying safer and more fun.  If you haven't done it recently, and want a refresher, you can always schedule an instructor.  Many pilots prefer to fly at night.
From the Right Seat
by Pete Rafle

At uncontrolled fields, the selection of the active runway should be based on the wind direction.  Although there is no prohibition from making a downwind departure, doing so is unwise and may cause a conflict with arriving traffic, or airplanes already in the pattern.  Recently, it has been observed that pilots have disregarded that a runway is in use and decided to use a downwind departure and conflicted with pattern traffic.

Before going to the opposite runway, the pilot must consider airport traffic, the wind velocity, the aircraft's capabilities, and ask why he is displaying this potentially dangerous behavior.  The active runway decision should be the result from consensus of pilots using the airport. To not use the active runway can, at worst, lead to a dangerous takeoff, and mid air collision.  The confusion in the pattern can also lead to other unacceptable risks.

Monthly MEET N' GREET39N Logo

When:  Saturday, Oct. 4
Where:  Pilots' Lounge
Time:  10:00 am - noon

WHY - WHY NOT?
What is the next best thing that pilots like to do, after flying - talk about flying.  Share your aviation experiences with other pilots, student pilots, and "wanna be" pilots.  Let's have some good old "hangar flying".  You never know who will show up - pilots from the '30s visited us one Saturday - and they had some interesting stories.  Join in.

FLIGHT SCHOOL HAPPENINGS

  • CFII Shannon Wea has been appointed Assistant Chief Pilot.  Because of his extensive experience, he can help Pete Rafle with Progress Checks and move students along more quickly.
  • A very special congratulations to Hank Gerwers who just soloed after 31 years.  Hank flew with us at Kupper and obtain his commercial rating in the '70s, however he hasn't flown since.  Well done.
  • We now have several more trained proctors which enables us to monitor tests more frequently.  If you have a test coming up soon, just call CATS at 1-800-947-4228 and make an appointment.  They have our schedule.
  • We were all sadden to learn of a former student, renter, airplane owner, and lessor had died of cancer.  His wish was for a missing man formation over his funeral, which we were honored to fly.
SAFETY CORNER - WEATHER FORECASTS

Have you ever given thought to the accuracy of weather forecasts?
Many pilots do not trust the accuracy of any forecast more than eight hours ahead. Here are some thoughts on forecast accuracy for you to consider.
A 12 hour forecast of good weather (3000 ft and 3 miles) is more likely to be correct than one for forecast of IFR conditions.
A four hour forecast for MVFR-IFR conditions will probably stand a chance of 80% of being correct.
The weather associated with fast moving cold fronts and squall lines is the most difficult to forecast accurately.
Forecasters can get the time rain or snow will begin right about 75% of the time.

The above observations are found in a useful little book, Practical Guide to Aviation Weather, 2nd ed. by John L. Nelson.

When obtaining a weather briefing , always ask questions you have about a forecast before making the decision to launch.

PRINCETON AIRPORT
FLYING TIGERS

In September 22 members enjoyed the dinner meeting at Pizza & Pasta Restaurant in Manville and they gained valuable aviation information from our guest speakers, Bob Eberly on operations in and about Philadelphia bravo (PHL) and John Cala on light sport aircraft (LSA).     There was great weather for the 11 members in 5 planes who flew to Columbia County Airport (1B1) in New York as we revisited a former frequent fly-in location from the past and enjoyed it as much as ever.

On October 19th are flying to Cherry Ridge (N30) led by member Glenn MacEwen to another great location for a Sunday morning flight.  So sign up on paft-nj.org website and see our other aviation information as well.  See you at Cherry Ridge!
