GREETINGS 
There are so many projects going on at the airport, it is difficult to tell when one is completed and a new one begins.  September went by like a blink of the eye. 
 
Despite the very hot weather, the gala for the Princeton Historical Society Antique and Fine Arts Show was very well attended.  The lecture, appraiser and the exquisite displays in the booths made attendance worth while.  No wonder they broke previous years' records. 
 
The AWOS is complete.  The fuel farm has been repaired. Still in progress is the surveillance system.  The clarity of the pictures which are monitored is amazing .  We  now have a great overview of the airport and it's activities, good and bad.
 
The Private and Instrument class are underway and our other usual activities are in full swing.

FLY BY THE NUMBERS

 

I have encountered more than a few pilots who fly with a "vague" idea of what speeds they should be flying, limits, and tolerances of mechanical operations in the airplane.

 

I believe that to fly well and safely, you need to have quantifiable targets to aim for.  For example, what speed should a pilot get the airplane to, after reducing power and lowering the first notch of flaps?  For a C-172, that speed should be 70 kts as the base turn is begun and the flaps are lowered to 20°.

 

What is the deepest a nick on a propeller needs to be to ask a mechanic to look at it? An 1/8th of an inch.

 

What is the angle of bank to achieve a standard rate turn?  It depends on your airspeed. Use the quick formula, airspeed divided by 10 plus 5°.  So at 100 kts, the angle of bank is 15°.

 

My point is that unless you know what you want the airplane to do, and work to achieve that target, you will not be managing the flight.  You will be just a passenger amazed at each antic the airplane performs.

PRINCETON AIRPORT
FLYING TIGERS
 

With the summer break over, PAFT kicked off its Fall meeting schedule on September 15 with dinner at Erini's Restaurant in Ewing.  PAFT member Raj Soni's presented a video and slide show covering his ten days of flying the Caribbean as part of this year's International Air Rally.

 

Then on September 18th and 19th PAFT held a drive/fly weekend to New York's mid-Hudson Valley. Saturday's activities inlcuded lunch at the Culinary Institute of America (Hyde Park), a tour of FDR's home, library and museum (Hyde Park), and dinner overlooking the river at Poughkeepsie.  Sunday started with brunch at the Beekman Arms Hotel in Rhinebeck and then a short drive to see the show at the Rhinebeck Aerodrome in Red Hook.  Two families even walked across the Hudson River on the world's longest pedestrian bridge (212 feet above the Hudson and 6,767 feet long).  Five families drove and three planes flew into Dutchess County airport (KPOU) for the event.
