Many of you gave up hours to make sure 2011 commemorated the beginnings of aviation 100 years ago, was appropriately celebrated. Your generosity with time was well rewarded with an outstanding Centennial Open House. About 2000 people will attest to the quality of your hard work - it was a great day. It will be a long time to equal this celebration, however we will all enjoy the fruits of those who came before us to make this airport something very special. Every time you fly, just remember those that make it possible. That's the best tribute -keep 'em flying. |

PRIVATE PILOT GROUND SCHOOL
Organizing now.
Our program is designed for the students to study on their own under the guidance of their instructors. Often the student finds that they need the discipline and interaction of the classroom setting to accomplish the knowledge portion of flight training.
We need twelve students to make this happen. Please contact us - let us know which day of the week is most convenient. The class runs for 13 + weeks. Each week you'll get an assignment; discuss the subject in class; and take quizzes together.
This might be just the push that helps you get through the studying.
As soon as we see that we have enough students, we'll let you know.
For Instrument Students, we will do the same, so let us know your preferences.

Going Beyond Required Currency
By Ryan Vinton
General Aviation accounts for only 60% of US flight time but 94% of all fatal accidents. One NTSB study says of those fatal GA accidents 97% are pilot error.
What do those numbers tell me? Flying is inherently safe in the hands of a competent, well trained and prepared pilot. In fact innumerable studies show it is the safest form of transportation ever created by humans in terms of fatalities per miles traveled.
Still, GA accidents continue to occur at a seemingly alarming rate when compared to the airlines and military, what is it that GA can do to improve these statistics?
The only inherent difference between GA and airline/military flight operations is pilot currency and training.
Airline captains take a checkride every 6 months in addition to flying often close to 1000 hours a year. GA pilots theoretically need only a flight review every 24 months.
Every pilot who's actively flying should make it their goal to get up with a CFI at least every six months and tailor a program with the instructor to meet his personal flying needs. Stay active by attending pilot seminars or participating in the WINGS program.
Make it your goal to go beyond the regulations when it comes to safety, you can never be too prepared. |

Safety Corner by Assistant Chief Pete Rafle
As some of you know, I made my first solo in 1964. In the years since then, I have flown over 40 types of airplanes as a pilot, navigator, and flight engineer. Much of this experience was in the pre-GPS era. I thought it might be useful to consider some of the steps used to plan a flight without the use of internet weather briefs, digital flight planning tools, or electronic calculators. Please do not misunderstand my motives. I love GPS and computers. I just want to remind you of the human thinking that is required so that you might be more deliberate as you plan you next cross country flight using those digital tools available today..

Ryan Vinton - FAAST Representative
Chief Pilot Ryan Vinton, who was appointed Princeton Airport's FAASTeam Representative, has planned an Wings Seminar in November. Is it worth-while? Only 1% of those who goes through the Wings program have had accidents-now that's a mighty statistic. More in November's newsletter. |

FORMER STUDENTS ARE NAVAL PILOTS
Peter Rafle, a former Naval pilot, can now add another notch to his belt with Ariel Kainerman, who just earned his Navy Wings of Gold and now is flying F-18s. He joins Tom Weaver, who also flies F-18s and is a graduate of the Naval Test Pilots School. Well done. |

At the Open House we had a short quiz about 39N. From those who answered all the questions correctly, we picked the winner, Gerrit Dispersyn. There were only two correct entries.

We are sadden to hear of the death of Chris Cannon, long time friend and pilot. Chris began with us at Kupper Airport under Veteran training. He had been fighting a long time - we'll miss his visits to the airport. |
News from the

PRINCETON AIRPORT FLYING TIGERS
PAFT kicked off its fall schedule with a dinner meeting at Pizza 'n Pasta in Manville featuring guest speaker Stephen Pope, senior editor of Flying magazine. Steve made 39N's 100th anniversary even more important as he reviewed the history of aviation in New Jersey and the 10s of airports that have been lost in the state.
On September 17th many PAFT members assisted with traffic, crowd control and aircraft marshalling at 39N's 100th Anniversary event.
For October's fly-in we'll head to Cherry Ridge (N30), PA for breakfast and take in the fall foliage. Members, and those wishing to join, are reminded that they can save $5 on 2012 dues by renewing or joining before December 31st. Check us out http://www.paft-nj.org/. |
