GREETINGS, 39N Logo

During the month of October we have had the runway, taxiways and ramp areas seal coated to protect the macadam from the elements.  We did this with little disruption only closing the runway for one day.

As the tumultuous world news continues to bring uncertainty to the outside world, there has to be some good news - yes, avgas went down 48 cents and jet A decreased a whole dollar - amazing!  It's about time.  This should be encouraging to those of you who have thought twice when the prices were over six dollars a gallon.

We are entering the holiday season when 39N gets involved with the holidays and community.  It is fun and we hope you, too, will help bring the joy aviation to the outside world.

Happy Thanksgiving.

WHY - WHY NOT?
What is the next best thing that pilots like to do, after flying - talk about flying.  Share your aviation experiences with other pilots, student pilots, and "wanna be" pilots.  Let's have some good old "hangar flying".  Join in.
SAFETY SEMINAR
"ABC's of AIRSPACE"
Tuesday, November 18th
 7:30 - 10:00pm
CFI  Matthew Axelrod
From the Right Seat
by Pete Rafle

When the temperature falls to 25°F and below, the engine needs to be pre-heated.  Plan on the extra time for this, and that you may not be the first in line for the line man to heat your airplane.  Be ready to start the engine quickly after the heater has been removed.

Avoid over priming when starting engines in cold weather.  Using too much prime can result in washing down the cylinder walls.  This removes the vital oil film for lubrication.
Over priming can also lead to fires under the cowling. Also, avoid pumping the throttle during attempted starts, especially in Cessna 152's, as this can result in a carburetor fire.

Review your manufacturer's instructions for cold weather operations in the aircraft manual BEFORE the really cold weather arrives.

FLIGHT SCHOOL HAPPENINGS

As the daylight hours are shorter, please be considerate with the schedule - be on time; return the plane on time; and please do not cancel at the last minute.

We welcome back CFI Matthew Axelrod after a summer break who will now help us out on Tuesdays.  We have also drafted him to lead our November seminar.

There is room in the Private Pilot Class, so if you want to join in, we will pro-rate the cost.

To those of you who can't fly at this time, try to keep up with the ground school studies - you have paid for that.
SAFETY CORNER

Winter is almost here and so it is time to think about how cold weather will affect how we operate airplanes.

Expect that the preflight inspection/preparation is going to take more time.  If you have scheduled the airplane for the 8 am slot, plan on clearing off frost or snow.  Use a broom carefully to remove the frost from the wings and horizontal stabilizer and elevator.  If the sun is out, let the aircraft warm up in the sun, and allow time for the remnants of the frost/ice to melt.

Taxi slowly and stop the airplane in an ice-free area for the run-up.  It can be disconcerting for the airplane to start moving in unexpected directions during the magneto check!

Winter time flying can be  wonderful, with power from dense cold air, good visibility, and snow covered scenery.  But it requires careful planning, detailed weather forecasts, warm clothing, and careful ground handling. I'll cover more winter flying tips in the coming issues.

PRINCETON AIRPORT
FLYING TIGERS

The October fly-in to Cherry Ridge had great weather.  The 9 members in 3 planes enjoyed the fall scenery, great food and conversation.

Our next fly-in, scheduled for Nov. 16th, will be hosted by Jay Martin (our member in New Hampshire) and he will be taking us to the Café at Malloy Air East at Francis S. Gabreski Airport (KFOK) in Westhampton, L.I.  Ernie and I are asking everyone to join us at our last fly-in of the year.  Real pilots fly, so make it to the November fly-in.  This goes for members and non-members as well.  Let's see how many planes we can get up in the air.

We are also having our last dinner meeting on Nov. 12th, hosted by RP Sandilya - visit our website for details and signup.  Dues for 2009 will be $20 until the end of the year and $25 if paid next year.  New members are always welcome and your dues, if paid in 2008, will also cover 2009.

ANNUAL SANTA FLY-IN

One of the best events at 39N is the Santa Fly-In.  This will be the 33rd year that we have sponsored this happening.  (At 47N before here.)   On December 24th at 11:00 a.m. Santa will fly into the airport with gifts for area children.  To participate you must bring a wrapped gift for you child or children with the name in large print.  (Gift not to exceed 12".  If you have more than one gift, tie them together so Santa gives them out together.)

You must also bring an equal number of unwrapped gifts for NEEDY children.  In the lobby there will be two chimneys to receive the respective gifts.  Get your gifts in early as Santa dispenses them in the order we receive them.  (Collection starts Nov. 28th.)

On Christmas Eve Day the Flying Tigers will help us with the crowd and giving out cookies & cocoa.  Pat McKinley, a local folk singer will sing holiday songs with the children, while  airport manager, Ken Nierenberg, transforms into Santa at a neighboring airport.   When Santa is near the airport we bring the public out on the ramp to watch Santa fly over.  Once he lands, everyone returns to the hangar and Santa will do his thing.  It's a great event.   We need all the eyes and ears to assure safety, so if you can come and help us on the 24th, please let us know.

P.S.  The needy gifts are dispersed through the Mercer County Board of Social Services who has become dependent upon the generosity of the airport family.  If you just would like to donate to the needy, that's great.   This year we will also collect canned and/or boxed food for the area Food Banks.  Please help out.
