HAPPY HOLIDAYS, 39N Logo
The busy holiday season has arrived and everyone is running around.  Fortunately, the weather has remained mild so you can escape the hub-bub.  Aviation has under-gone some changes during the year, but we pilots are a durable group and we'll adjust to what has to be done.
Our 34th Annual Santa Fly In is a most enjoyable event where the aviation community and the public merge in true holiday spirit of giving and receiving.  Please help this 2009 event by volunteering.
May you and your families have a Happy Chanukah, Merry Christmas, Happy Kwanza and a very Happy & Healthy New Year.

ANNUAL SANTA FLY-INSanta Waves to the Crowd

All to often the airport community and the community surrounding the airport are at odds.  Our Annual Santa Fly-In bridges that gap in the best way possible.  2009 will mark the 34th year for this event.  And it has grown and become very successful, large, efficient and enjoyed by all.

On December 24th at 11:00 a.m. Santa will fly into the airport with gifts for area children.  Usually Santa, a.k.a. Airport Manager Ken Nierenberg, flies in in anything from a Decathlon to a Pilatus, and in inclement weather he's arrived in a Robinson and a Twin Star.  Every year it gets better and better.

The new Hudson River flight rules have been issued.  From now on, the area is called the New York Class B Airspace Hudson River and East River Exclusion Special Flight Rules Area (SFRA).  Look at the back of the current New York T.A.C. for a description of the procedures.

The best way to learn how to navigate this area is by going to www.FAASafety.gov.  Sign in to take the online course for the New York Hudson River exclusion.  If you are not yet signed up for the "Wings" program at www.FAASafety.gov now is a good time to do so and take this course.  At the end of the course there is a test, and passing it will earn you a certificate and a wallet card which will be required for operating in the New York SFRA.

REALITIES OF THE WAR IN AFGANISTAN
39N Logo
The war across the seas came close to us when two Marine helicopters from Johnstown, PA stopped to refuel at Princeton.39N Logo

The Huey, left, and the Cobra, right, were on there way to Massachusetts and Maine for the funerals of two comrades who were killed the week prior in Afganistan.  They were going to do a "fly by" for the funerals.

SAFETY CORNER

Recently, there was an accident that occurred near Cape May which has me very troubled.  The final report is not yet prepared but the known facts are difficult to understand.

The weather was reported to be estimated at 300ft ceiling with less than a mile visibility.  The non-instrument rated pilot was seen taxiing, but it was assumed he was simply positioning the aircraft to take on fuel.  Besides the pilot, his twelve year old son was in the right seat.  They were reportedly going to Indiana for a deer hunt.

The aircraft was seen taking off and disappearing into the low overcast.  The aircraft struck the ground, killing both occupants, less than twenty miles from the airport.

Why would a non-instrument rated pilot attempt to fly in these weather conditions?  Why would he take his son with him in this weather?

PRINCETON AIRPORT
FLYING TIGERS
The November fly-in to West Hampton, NY was cancelled due to localized weather to the east, but the 6 planes and 15 people enjoyed the clear weather to the west at Lancaster, Pa.

At the November dinner/meeting our new officers were elected -    President - Ernie Schirmer
    Vice-President - Ron Goldfarb
    Co-Secretaries - Cynthia Gilbert & Larry West
    Treasurer - Dick Nierenberg

We wish our new slate of officers the best for the next two years and we thank Ben Gazdowicz for his service during the last four years as Vice President and President.
On Christmas Eve I can think of no better place to be then helping underprivileged children, so members volunteer to help out at the Princeton Airport's Santa's Fly-in.  Go to our website www.paft-nj.org and sign up to support this annual event.
Best wishes to you all during this Holiday Season.
LEATHER JACKETS 39N Logo

Backin in the '70s we taught Mel Schott and others in his group to fly.  Mel's family started Schott Brothers - Leather Jackets.  Well, Mel has retired to Florida, however the style of bomber jacket we stock are still
still made in the USA.  These are the finest for the price.  We lost touch with the company, however we will have a limited supply in the shop for the holidays.  Check them out.
